In 2020, COVID-19 dramatically changed the way organisations trained, upskilled, and engaged with their staff and customers. As L&D professionals we pivoted, along with our stakeholders, to Zoom and developed a range of Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT).

But like old-style face-to-face facilitation, even VILT will not be sustainable for long, something more is needed. As L&D professionals we need to ‘up our game’ to stay relevant in a global market.

As the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns made face-to-face training impossible, leading organisations rapidly shifted existing training content to online learning. By leveraging their current training assets and new technologies, these organisations were able to quickly respond to the threats COVID-19 presented to their workforce and business continuity.

It remains unclear if face-to-face learning will ever become a reliable possibility for L&D professionals. As we move into 2021 and beyond, what is certain is that working from home will increasingly become our new reality. Organisations that can quickly and effectively convert their existing, face-to-face, paper-based training into interactive online learning will outperform those that don’t.
